FOIE GRAS

Yesterday on Facebook, a friend shared this really disturbing picture of how foie gras ( which translates to fatty liver)  is prepared. I tried to share it on my Facebook profile twice, but somehow I don't know what happened? It just isn't there! So I'm going to put it up here, hoping that well, it will remain here and also because I want to raise awareness about the way ducks and geese  are treated during this appalling process.Look at this

It really made me sad and angry. I don't know how this is OKAY? I don't know, I don't know how we can allow ourselves to hurt animals this way.The comments next to the picture had people saying that the animals are alive when this goes on, I really don't know if this is true, but it's just horrible. Fine, so you may think, well, if they are dead when this happens then atleast they won't be feeling this pain, yeah fine but did you know that when they are alive, they are

  1. Crammed into tiny pens
  2. Faced to live in their feces
  3. Have pipes SHOVED down their throats upto 3 times A DAY , gorging their stomachs with grain, JUST SO their LIVERS SWELL to more than 10 X the normal size of a goose/duck?
  4. Most geese/ducks end up with swollen feet , they sit all day unable to carry their own weight, and unable to move in terrible living conditions. They fall sick and get diseases, and are "attacked" by rats and maggots.

Being force fed

Comparison of liver sizes

If you think about it, do you really need so much abuse to get "fine" dining? I always believe that it's the attitude/the way the chef feels in the kitchen when/while cooking which affects how the food we eat turns out.You know how cooking with love makes everything taste better? Well perhaps the same should apply to the ingredients in our food, although I don't know how we'd ever justify killing with love :(
