What?
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) the brother/sister relative of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Where is it found in?
- Toothpaste, cosmetic cleansers
- Mascara
- Mouthwash
- Skin cleanser
- Moisturisers
- Shampoos and other hair products
- Body washes, bubble baths, bath gels
Here is the scary part, (although present in higher concentrations) SLS is also part of cleaning agents such as
- Laundry detergents
- Stain removers
- Carpet cleaners
- Fabric glue
- Car-wash soaps
- Garage floor cleaners
- Engine degreasers
Why is it an ingredient in beauty and bath products?
- It is cheap $$$$$
- For shampoos and soaps, it is a wetting agent, and foaming agent. I think, well least for me, when I would see soap or other bathing products produce lather, it would make me think & feel that the product is working better or cleaning better? It's a psychological thing they play with us customers!
What health effects has it been found to have/linked with?
- Irritating the skin
- Thought to be a cancer inducing compound as it mimics female hormones in the body
- Inducing rashes
Of course there are two sides to every coin, there will be many out there who have opposing views about the effects of this chemical compound. I'm just presenting a few things about the agent which I believe in that happens to be backed up by findings of a few researchers. :)
Tooodles Rainbowzzzzzzzz!
